Cycling to education for an accessible region
Published on May 20, 2022Every day, 50,000 people travel to the education locations of Summa, Fontys and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). On the Cycle to Work Day, Brainport Bereikbaar and Ons Brabant Fietst organized a special cycling campaign on the TU/e campus.
Students and employees were surprised with a healthy treat, a real pit stop and a lot of cycling inspiration. And all with one goal: to promote the bicycle as a healthy mobility solution for a more accessible Brainport.
Dashing through the Brainport
“If we don't do anything, the road network in the fast-growing Brainport region will become congested. We all need to travel smarter. Cycling is perhaps the smartest choice there is," says Joost Beenker of Brainport Bereikbaar. Traveling by bicycle is good for the environment, contributes to reducing traffic jams and is good for mental and physical health. Yet there is still plenty to gain when it comes to bicycle use. This opportunity was brought to the attention on May 19 at the initiative of Summa College, Fontys and TU/e. Employees and students that day were warmly welcomed, treated to a smoothie and received their personal cycling recipe, in which they described the benefits that apply to them of cycling to work or training. People who were already on their bicycles received a bicycle check. Mobile bicycle repair shops ensured that cyclists could travel safely.
During the day, administrators from the three educational institutions also came to campus by bicycle. They look back on a successful day: “Around 50,000 people travel to and from our educational locations every day. We like to encourage them to take their bike, because it is good for everyone's health and because we can really make a big difference in the region for people and the environment! It's great that we can put it in the spotlight in this way.”
Travel differently
In addition to the bicycle, Brainport Bereikbaar also offers all kinds of other smart mobility solutions, divided into eleven projects. From special buses for commuting to shared transport and mobility hubs. Everything to ensure that travel behavior in the region literally and figuratively changes. Organizing this day is part of this: inspiring governments and knowledge institutions to cycle more often in the context of smarter travel for an accessible region.
